Cutest penguin themed diner! The menus have adorable penguin drawings by kids, wish I got a picture of them!! They recently redecorated and got new menu, if you have been before, or read old reviews give them another try, totally different scene. They have some unusual breakfast items: homemade granola crusted French toast, and salmon omelette (we had both and liked them both!! See photos!). Defiantly worth checking out!

This is my go to spot anytime of the day because they serve breakfast food all day. I just tried the yogurt parfait and was told it was made with housemaid granola. I tried it, with both choices of strawberries and blueberries, and cannot get it out of my mind! I want it now again and again.

basic food, not great but not bad. had breakfast- "andys jumbo breakfast wrap", home fries, coffee- it was ok, could have used more spices /flavor. service is a little disorganized, prices moderate.

One of my favorite places, not only at the beach, but ever. Pros: 1) They have a fantastic gluten-free menu and not just the lazy kind, like "our gluten-free options are things that don't include gluten...like salad." They have a GF fried chicken sandwich which gave me a happy coma. 2) Their service is top-notch. Every server I've had has been down-to-earth, friendly and personable. And I've been here multiple times in one week during my annual beach week jaunts. 3) Who doesn't love Penguins? They cater to a diverse population; they have a farm to table menu post-5 o'clock for the fancier folk but you can bring your kids in as well any time of day. Big kids of any age can order a milk shake or you can get a beer with your lunch. It's up to you. Cons: 1) I was very sad to walk in this year and see they had Bethesda-ized. I liked the more laid back decor of diner seats and crayons on the table. The more chic chic doesn't appeal to me. 2) Even though I like that everyone can come here, it is a bit annoying to have fifteen kids screaming in your ear. I know there isn't an easy solution, but perhaps some creative ones? Like discount kid menus from 11-12? 3) I love the GF options but in the spirit of things, I wish there were more. Since it's more than, "Here's your GF roll", I'm hoping PD will expand to GF breakfast soon (pancakes and french toast especially). You already have the bread, and I believe there's a gluten free batter that's made for the chicken, so if it can be converted sugar-style with blueberries or peaches, that would be scrumptious and $$ :)

We were early to the beach and were the first customers in after they unlocked the doors. My sons had the silver dollar pancakes off the kids menu, one with blueberries and the other with chocolate chips. There were 4 small pancakes on the plate, and my kids can eat. I should have ordered from the regular menu for them. Still, they were happy and the price was good. My husband ordered Andy's Jumbo Breakfast wrap and it was huge! But even bigger was the amount of home fries on the plate. Enough for everyone at our table to sample and lots left over. I had the French Toast with 2 eggs and it was good and filling. The staff was kind and patient. And the kids are encouraged to draw a penguin on the back of their kids menu, so it can be displayed as the cover of the regular menu. It was fun for them to do.

Totally new restaurant. The menu has nothing to do with the one displayed here now. We were overwhelmingly surprised. Main Street Bethany is not know for haute cuisine. We saw the new menu and decided to come back for dinner. Great presentation fresh ingredients with just outstandingly creative taste. This is a restaurant in need of heavy support so that the chef stays in Bethany. Will be there as often as I can this week

Stopped in for dinner and ordered cautiously since first visit, but pleasantly surprised. Overall very good and worth going back to try another option. They have top chef in for dinner and it showed, good job.

The penguin diner sounded great in a radio commercial I heard yesterday, especially when mentioning their muscle special. I excitedly texted my husband that we should go here sometime, and he surprised me by saying we could go for dinner that night. Not only do we never eat out, maybe only once a year because we're in the "hot dogs in baked beans" struggle. Needless to say, money is pretty tight. But given the fact that we literally only see each other once a week, because of work, and he happened to surprise me by having a Thursday night off, it seemed like a worthwhile occasion for an impromptu date night. Their online menu did not mention the muscle special I'd heard advertised, so I called and asked if it was a current menu item. A young guy told me it was, and when I asked if they'd be open until 10pm, I was told "yes, we are". So I left my house at 8, sat through an hour of traffic, paid the set price of $4.50 for parking, and reached the diner about a minute after 9. A waitress informed me that the Penguin was closed. In shock I mentioned that every single site I pulled up for the diner (while searching for the current menu), had listed 10pm as the closing time. She just said "we lied, sorry". I get it, there's nothing she could do to help us in this case, but to have driven 2 hours round trip for nothing, pay way too much for parking only to leave, and lose all of the time we had to spend together, only to go home without dinner, was beyond disappointing. Our date was totally ruined on the 1 single night we had to do something together, and we didn't even get to sample the food I've read so many terrible reviews about. Maybe you did us a favor. Since everywhere else was closed on the way home, we went to walmart and bought 2lbs of muscles for only $6, and so even with the useless parking spot we paid for, we still made out better than if we'd paid to eat at the diner. My suggestion is that you update your hours to reflect accurate times, because misinformation leaves almost as bad a taste in my mouth as it sounds like some of the reviewed meals have. Don't make people have to hunt for your menu either, if you're having an awesome sounding special that nobody even knows about, it's not doing your business any favors. I've never even eaten here and I'm never coming back.

Breakfast at its best! The huevos rancheros were perfectly cooked and the flavor was spot on (just enough heat from the chorizo). The portions are very ample (nothing compared to NJ diners, but still more than you can eat). The French toast is fantastic. No need to get there early as the place does not open until 8:00 and the crowd doesn't come until after 9:00.

COME TO THIS PLACE! An amazing location, great space, friendly staff, great service and the best huevos rancheros I've EVER had. Can't wait to make this a family tradition. Thanks Penguin Diner!

We were there for breakfast 7/21/15, a Tuesday at 11:00. Although the French toast (granola crusted) was pricey $11, it was served with fresh fruit and real syrup. It was fabulous! We each had 4 "triangles". Let's just say we did not need lunch. Our teen waitress was certainly satisfactory but the hostess was superb. She was a 40-something lady and when she wasn't busy, she checked on us. Decor is cute. So convenient to the beach. Restroom nice and clean and also quaint. Treat yourself to a nice breakfast!

Service was ok. Chocolate chip pancakes for my daughter were merely drizzled in chocolate syrup and $3 for a tiny glass of milk seems a bit ridiculous in this area. Cuban sandwich was had good flavor just no attention to detail. Looked like it was assembled half ass.

Sad to report how disappointed we were with this diner this morning. It has been refurbished since our last visit three years ago but has lost quality of food and timely service in the meantime. The waitress was attentive but could not make up for the tardiness of the food which when it arrived was disappointing. Don't order the sweet potato fries! The pancakes were great and my omelette was alright but the French toast was pretty meager as was the portion of ham.

I went for breakfast with the kids and after seeing the dinner menu, went for date night. Breakfast was delicious, hearty and reasonably priced. Dinner blew me away. Fresh caught seafood, veggies that didn't disappoint, all so reasonably priced. Beyond Gluten friendly. They were really sensitive to the gluten allergies, which was a huge relief. All frier oil is GF. Fried green tomato was inventive, heaping with crab meat, the sauce added brightness, the breading was light, and the tomato was juicy. Calimary was fresh, not frozen, coated nicely, really tender. The bacon on the burger was so thick, with organic, local beef, juicy, delightful. The blackened fish taco was spot on, dressed perfectly, flaky rockfish, delicious slaw, well seasoned. Crab cakes had very little filler, meaty and flavorful. This prices were amazing, budget friendly, with great food. I consider it a gem in Bethany Beach. Go there!

Beware..... You will pay $9 and up for hashbrowns from a bag..the cheap kind. The breakfast wrap was quite odd tasting. The French toast was ok, mainly due to the real syrup, but the "combo" meal which is two eggs (no toast), bacon and French toast means one slice of French toast. It cost $10, plus extra for coffee, but I was charged $15.50. Service was slow, the food was mediocre to bad, and they charged an incorrect amount. A person table at a table beside us sent their biscuit back as it wasn't baked. PS I heard it was good before, so maybe this is spring reopening issues.

We went here for dinner and were pleasantly surprised -- really great salads and burgers, plus standard kids menu. Slow (but friendly) service and lots of flies around the table, but food was great.

This is no ordinary diner. I went for breakfast and was so happy with the fresh food, Vermont syrup that I decided to try dinner. Dinner is amazing and so far it is Bethany's best kept secret, no wait for a table. The crab cakes are the best I have had and that says a lot since I am from Maryland. Also, the calamari was great, the blackened fish tacos, homemade potato chips, everything is excellent! Watch out Sedona, Off The Hook and Parkway, you have some serious competition. Great service as well, oh the specialty drinks, yummy. My new favorite place.

Had one of the daily specials; Baja Crab Melt. I chose the coleslaw for my side, hubby went with the fries. All were excellent. Portions were very generous. We could not finish it all. Service was very friendly and prompt. Excellent experience.

Best meal we had at the beach all week and very reasonable prices. Not the penguin we remember and a must stop in Bethany. Fish tacos were perfect. Eggplant unbelievable. I even ate one of my daughters sliders it was so good.

I wouldn't say that the Penguin Diner was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had, but it was close. My parents and me were looking for a quick bite to eat in among the Bethany shops and the Diner seemed like a decent enough place. It was the second week of September, so it was far from crowded. The hostess quickly seated us, though why she chose to cram every party into one corner still baffles me. We were uncomfortably sandwiched between two couples when the majority of the tables in the restaurant were vacant. Our neighbors got their food before we ordered and quickly sent an omelet back for being visually undercooked. Wary but hopeful, we placed our orders a few minutes later, avoiding anything with eggs (half the menu, it's a diner.) Mom and dad ordered a BLT and a chicken sandwich, respectively. The BLT was on soggy toast, with floppy lettuce, over-ripened tomatoes, and undercooked bacon (to be fair, mom requested that it not be crispy, but this was nearly raw). The chicken sandwich was bland and flavorless, improved only with generic hot sauce. I ordered the chicken fajita wrap, a fairly safe choice. It was dripping with oil and grease from whatever they fried the pepper and onions in - - not the worst flavor, but unappetizing. I shouldn't have to wash my hands after eating a wrap. All were served with stale, unsalted potato chips that added nothing to the meal. Would have been thrilled to get some fries, but they're not standard sides. All in all, we paid $40 for a 3 person meal that no one liked. Having been to more than a few diners, it was grossly overpriced. The service wasn't awful, but definitely needs improvement and was obviously made up of recently hired, inexperienced seasonal staff. Avoid this tourist trap. You'll be much happier almost anywhere else.

We went to the diner for dinner. They had just recently renovated and it looks great inside. They are doing a new limited farm to table menu for dinner. We had the filet and crab cakes. The dinner included potatoes and fresh asparagus. Everything was good. You could cut the filet with your fork. The crab cakes were crab and not filler. The prices were what would be expected for the area for good food. Please try you will not be sorry!! We will be returning.

If you enjoy horrible food and terrible service, well then this is the place for you. First off, the customer service was pathetic! Counting my table, there were probably only five more tables in there while we were dining in. That's not bad considering I counted six people on the wait staff. And yet not one of them could come up to us and refill our waters? Or ask how the food was when we got it? Actually to be honest, after they handed us our food our waiter never showed back up to check up on us. It's as if he knew the food was terrible and didn't want to deal with the problems that may arise from it. He only came by at the end to give us our check. Speaking of our waiter; I don't know if the kid was new or not but he really needs to step up his game and work on his speaking skills. Granted, if he was new to this that's fine, but if not then ya'll got some problems. If you're new to the job, as you should introduce yourself to your customers you should mention that. This way we cut you some slack and become more understanding, especially if you're still learning the menu. The guy who served us seemed to have some knowledge about the food when asked, but the delivery of his speech left much to be desired. It was just confusing. Aside from the fact that there were SIX PEOPLE "WORKING", they weren't working at all! The majority of them were teenagers and young adults, as well as one older woman. AND THEY WERE ALL BEHIND THE COUNTER CHATTING. My friends and I even overheard two of the waiter's conversation. They were goofing off out in the open and were even cursing out loud. Seriously? There were kids not too far from us and you're going to use that type of language? The food. Oh dear god the food. When my friends inquired about the Black Bean Burger our waiter mentioned that it was pretty popular albeit a little spicy. Well they order it, thinking to trust our waiter's judgement. Well they get the food and it was literally black beans on a bun. There was literally no beef patty in sight. The menu and our server never mentioned that part. If anything we thought it was going to be a regular burger with black beans on top. NOT JUST ALL BEANS. And it wasn't even spicy! I ordered Beany's Bacon Cheddar Burger. I asked for no tomato and if I could exchange the cheddar cheese with plain ol' American cheese. Waiter said sure they could do that. I eventually get my food and lo and behold nothing was changed. But getting to the taste of the food, to sum it up it was pretty gross; on the burger side at least. I cant really speak for the other food. But the bread was greasy, considering it was covered in what seemed to be butter then toasted a bit as the sides were a bit crunchy. The burger was greasy as well and practically oozed out oil. And the fries were the exact same fries they sold back at my old public highschool in MD. Meaning that they were pre-packaged frozen french fries bought from a distributor. The fries though are so frail that just like my old school, you couldn't throw them in the fryer so instead you bake them. So what you get are these droopy tasteless fries which are smooshy in some areas while being somewhat crispy in others. If you're not used to the taste it can be pretty disgusting. Never coming back here.

I had to give it a one star because we ended up walking out without eating, so this review is not on the quality of the food. We have been long time patrons and were completely shocked by the complete 180 degree turn this restaurant took. The kid friendly burger, sandwich, wrap place is no more. Im not sure it should be called penguin diner anymore. Kids loved the "penguin" theme and "diner" does not discribe the new menu at all (the old menu is posted on this website) . My daughter was looking forward to her yearly birthday crabcake sandwich and awesome homemade chips $9.95, but what few choices they had on the dinner menu showed a crab cake dinner with new potatoes and asparagus $20-$28 so we left disappointed. The tip off should have been the white linen tablecloths and napkins we noticed when we first walked in but we were in shock by the complete change in decor. So, no more running off the beach in our beach clothes and flip flops to catch a quick lunch. So sad because it was the only place so close to the beach that the kids loved and still pleased adults with discerning tastes. I guess adults with kids will be stuck going to Grottos across the street if they want to eat indoors. So if you go for dinner, dress up and leave the kids at home. And Penguin Diner, good luck because you cut your patronage in half.... you will be missed by many "families"....

Worst restaurant I've ever been to. We were the only people there at 10:00. You order at the cash register, like a fast food joint. They then serve you cold mediocre food on paper plates. The employees just stood around and talked the whole time. My husband and I joked that this was a drug front...I honestly wouldn't doubt it.

Food was decent once we were seated and actually received our meal, but it was a 45 minute wait to be seated in a half empty restaurant at 11:00 a.m., and then one of the kid's orders didn't arrive until everyone else had finished eating. The manager was obviously working as hard as she could go. The wait staff and hostess in particular did not seem competent.

They managed to tick all the boxes for an awful meal out. Long waits for everything for no apparent reason, check. Not receiving silverware, drink refills, or several pieces of the dishes we ordered without explicitly requesting them from the waitress, check. Filthy floors and chairs, and flies everywhere, check. Having a day and a half of my beach vacation ruined due to food poisoning, check. Never eating here again, check.

I'd been here a handful of times before so stopping on a Sunday afternoon before hitting the road back to Baltimore seemed like a good plan. We were looking for something quick and reasonably priced, and this was a good place to get that. We were seated immediately, which was great considering how busy Bethany was that day- but it seemed like some kind of staff meeting was occurring at the time in the bar area (paychecks and scheduling were also being done), so we didn't have a server come to our table for a while- everyone's attention was elsewhere. Overall, the restaurant had a dated and cluttered feel- could've been a little cleaner and more updated. Another thing that always gets me- the silverware had been cleaned but had water spots and streaks all over (as if someone towel dried them). Once a server did greet us, the service was really pretty good. The food came out quickly and was delicious (two of us ordered off the breakfast menu, two from lunch). I got the Grown Up Grilled Cheese with bacon and it was awesome! Ultimately, The Penguin Diner was great for what we wanted it to be- quick, tasty, and affordable. I wish I could rate them a bit higher, but the dated and cluttered (not necessarily dirty) atmosphere and lack of service at the beginning of our experience kept me from four stars.

How can service be so shitty when no ones here? There are maybe 5 tables and I can see at least 10 staff members where I'm sitting. Refills barely happened, took so long to get the check, and the food was not impressive. The crab cake was cold, they put tomato on even when we asked for there to be none, the guacamole is a green that I don't think I've ever seen except for someone getting sick, and the ketchup bottles could really use a good cleaning. I also wish I hadn't looked down when they were sweeping the floor. At least they were sweeping. The staff stands by the register or sits at the counter and just hangs out. At least half of the people here aren't doing anything. During the course of our meal two people had to walk to the counter in order to get service. A kid walked up and ordered a milkshake and pointed to what table he's at, and another man walked up to the register to pay the bill because no one came to his table to pick it up. I'm not old enough to drink, but the bar looked pretty good. Go get slightly drunk and maybe you'll have a better experience than we did.

I cannot speak to the food, because we went in, sat down, and there were so many flies buzzing about and landed on the countertop that we left immediately.

Really great service from the wait staff. Megan was friendly, cheerful and checked on us often. Wish I had ordered a burger - I saw these monster burgers pass by me several times. Western omelet was perfectly acceptable and the home fries were decent. Coffee was good and is served in your choice of medium or large to-go cup. Sit by the window to people watch. There is also a counter for singles or couples who don't want to wait for a table. Will go again.

We've always loved the Penguin for breakfast, and were looking forward to trying the 'new' place this year. But the experience wasn't good at all. When we walked in, there was a hostess station with two girls behind it, but neither of them were paying attention to those coming in, so we weren't sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves, which we finally awkwardly did. The waitress was nice but seemed overwhelmed, though the place wasn't that busy (a bad sign we ignored because it wasn't as busy as years past). It took awhile to get menus and water. My wife ordered pancakes with no sugar and two hard-scrambled eggs. I ordered scrambled eggs with bacon, home fries, and a biscuit. Her order came out with sugar on the pancakes. My eggs were also scrambled hard like hers, and I hate them like that. The home fries were those pre-formed frozen ones out of a bag, with no flavor, and some were burned. The biscuit was served with no jelly or butter on the table or the plate - by the time I could flag someone down to get some, the biscuit was cold. Then when the check arrived, we weren't told what to do with it - it was just a check, not in a folder, so we thought we were supposed to pay up front, but we weren't - and it took a good ten minutes of standing around before we could actually pay and leave, it seems that our standing up just threw the entire operation into a tizzy. My wife's pancakes and the great syrup moved the review from one star to two. The lack of organization, the sterile nature of the place (there's no background music playing, so you only had other diners to listen to), the useless 'hostess station', the poor execution of something as simple as scrambled eggs and hash browns, made me long for the old days of The Penguin. We didn't come back for the dinner - or any more breakfasts.

We've been going to the Penguin Diner since it opened, and we've found the food to be reliable and good, but since there has been a change in management, and chef, we've found the food to be outstanding. My egg white omelette with crabmeat and fresh vegetables was the best I've ever tasted. The fruit salad was fresh with seasonal fruits. They had plenty of gluten free options, and we were told that there are more to come. My husband enjoyed his omelette with onions and feta cheese. The portion size was more ample than any other of our favorite diners. The new manager shared with us that they are featuring more and more locally sourced food, and it was evident that the chef was enjoying ways to feature them including the way our food was garnished. Our quest for the perfect beach diner is over. We'll see you soon, Penguin Diner!

Came here to eat after a day at the beach with the family. The service is pretty terrible so is the food. We came in order a black bean burger, build your own burger , cheesesteak, and huevos rancheros. It's pretty sad when all of the food came out dry as anything. And it took them an hour to brig our food out When the restaurant wasn't even full. For my burger I asked for bacon, avocado and sautéed mushroom. Out of the three topping all I got was my bacon. I asked for fries but they gave me potato chips. It's pretty sad especially since I had the waiter repeat the order to me. Definitely would not come again.

We stopped in for lunch on a cold, windy Saturday in January. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was welcoming. It had the sunny, fresh feel of a neighborhood cafe, with none of the grimey feel of your typical diner. There was a guy playing acoustic guitar in the corner and I noticed that he was really raking it in with the tips even though the tunes he selected were pretty obscure and folky sounding. Not my cup of tea, but definitely added to that neighborhood hangout vibe. I wish the food was better because this place gave me such a good first impression. Honestly, the food seemed kind of hit or miss. My husband's Cuban sandwich was excellent and the kids grilled cheese had all the toasted buttery goodness with oozy cheese in the middle that you crave on a cold January day. However, I was really disappointed in my crab soup, which was actually a special that day. It was thick and grey and gelatinous... It tasted alright, but I just couldn't get past the feeling that I was eating prison slop. To be fair, the server did notice that I wasn't eating the soup and remarked that it was too thick. Then I heard him tell the cook to fix the soup, so hey, I guess that was sort of considerate of him. In conclusion, I would recommend this place for a nice little family-friendly lunch spot, but I would urge you to ask the server for food recommendations before you order.

Ordered the steak sandwich. It was pretty greasy. The bottom roll was soaking with grease by the end of the meal. The wife got the 2 by 2. She said the pancakes were OK, but didn't touch the sunny side up eggs, as they were clearly undercooked. The kids got the pancakes for dinner. They were also OK. The other guests in our party also lamented the overly greasy meals. Overall a mediocre diner. Fyi, they charge extra for all sides. It's a convenient location as it is really close to the beach.

If you are in Bethany Beach and are looking for a place to eat, don't go to the Penguin Diner. I had the "World's Greatest" Grilled Cheese Sandwich and I didn't like it at all. The cheese tasted strange and the bread was very heavy and seeded. The crab cake sandwich was average, and the milkshake was ok. The service was alright, but the food took a long time to come and they got part of my order wrong. Maybe penguins should stick to Antarctica. (note: this review was written by my 10-year-old daughter, who is an authority on grilled cheese sandwiches. And I concur.)

Ugh. Had to wait 10 minutes to be greeted despite plenty of open tables; service was incredibly slow; one of our orders wasn't even put in while the other 4 orders all had something wrong with them. Lots of apologies about what they acknowledged as numerous mistakes on their side, but no attempt to make things right other than "we'll put that order in right away and ask to rush it" (by this point the other diners in our group were done eating). Food was okay. We will not return.

We have come to Bethany Beach for many years now and one of favorite things to do was come to the Penquin Diner for our favorite sandwich, the Cloak and Dagger. This year we stopped in and found out that they have removed it from the menu. Wanted to just get up and leave. We stayed. Server was very good. We had to settle for other sandwiches. There were five of us. THe burger looked good and I was told it was Ok. I was told the black bean burger was Ok, same with the chicken sandwich. All Ok, nothing fancy. My crab Cake sandwich was exactly what I expected. Small crab cake on a big roll (what is the problem with restaurants and crab cake sandwiches) and not a lot of flavor. Only thing we really didn't like at all was the French Turkey. It turned out to be a Breakfast Monte Cristo without ham. The menu wording let us to believe it was a toasted french roll, not french toast. Would have been better on white toast. THe turkey cheese and raspberry sauce was good but the french toast made it heavy and overpowered everything else. Not sure we will return as the prices are a bit high for what it is. The diner atmosphere is pretty good and fun. Our service was a bit slow but there was also a 15 person table that got seated right before us. Kitchen must have not been ready or able to handle a large group. In past years the service has been Ok.

If you haven't eaten at the Penguin Diner recently, you really need to go back. They've changed chefs in the last ~6 months and the change is for the better, by A LOT. I got the breakfast combo w/ scrambled eggs and French toast, and the French toast was quite possibly the best French toast I've ever had anywhere. My dad got the chipped beef gravy over biscuits, and my dad is about the biggest biscuit snob on the planet--and even he had to admit the biscuits were as good (or better!) than he could make. And they have a full bar! The mimosas were to die for. Seriously, if you're in the area, you should check this California-style diner out. You will not be disappointed.

I like diners. Just not this one. Their hours of operation are not typical of most diners. Their food is of lesser quality than what's available at other restaurants nearby. The service was slow. Take your money elsewhere and save yourself an experience you'll wish you never had.

Visitors in and near Bethany, don't do it. They are bad, foul food. Waste your money go ahead, you've been warned.

My wife and I recently ate at the Penguin Diner. We had lunch and a shake for desert. I gave it two stars because I felt the food , the style of service (i.e. pay at the counter), and the general motif was pretty out dated. We felt that their shakes were pretty good so I gave it two stars. In total, I have probably been eaten there about three times in the past three years. Once a season I venture in to see if it got any better, hoping beyond hope that it has, but it really hasn't changed much or at all. Bethany beach really doesn't have many options downtown for a quick bite after going to the beach so you end up trying the Penguin just out of pure desperation. However, I can probably say that this will be my last visit. I really struggle to see how this place stays in business. I would have thought that five guys moving in next store would have put this place out of business, but it keeps on trucking. When I see it there, season after season, I begin to question my belief in capitalism. I am providing this information and insight into the Penguin based on my personal first hand knowledge of this restaurant.

A friend and I went to the Penguin Dinner few weekends ago. It was during the off season in Bethany Beach, DE, and the chef and hostess were so nice and accommodating. The chef indicated that anything we see on the menu he would be glad to customize to whatever our palate desired. I asked him about the burgers and he indicated that he uses a couple different cuts of angus beef and mixes them with seasoning. We ordered, and it was the best burger I have ever had. It was large enough for two people served on a brioche bun with bib lettuce, Swiss and mushrooms. Then he came out with samples of his homemade cream of crab soup, which was also "to die for". It is so refreshing to meet food servers that aim to please and bend over backwards to be sure you really enjoy your meal. Can't wait till my next trip down to the beach to go there again. Barb K

Food was very good. I have to admit in the past it was just ok. But after my last visit I felt the need to yelp! Good job service was very good place was packed. Prices in line for a restaurant a block off the beach. Joint fills up quick so take that in consideration during peak tourist season...your kids will beg you for penguin stuff adorning the gift nook....

We went there for dinner tonight with two little ones. Many families were there so I would say it is very kid friendly. My pancakes were delicious - so many, I couldn't eat them all. Service was great. Loved it!

My husband and I stopped by for breakfast around 9am on a Saturday morning for a quick bite to eat before going to the beach. As we walked in, we noticed the place was full, so we figured the food must be good. Unfortunately this was truly not the case with this place. We were seated at the counter which was fine. We ordered our drinks and then our meal. When my coffee was served I immediately noticed something stuck to the inside of the cup right above the coffee fill line. After taking a closer look I saw that it was a used sugar packet that was stuck to the inside of the cup...GROSS!! Do they even wash their coffee mugs?!?! It was busy and our waitress was rushed, but seriously, how can you miss a piece of trash that big in a cup of coffee that you are serving to a customer? I should have taken this as a hint and just left after that unpleasant discovery. Both of us ordered an egg white omelette with veggies, English muffin and hash browns. Honestly, the highlight of the meal was the English muffin. My omelette came out with a noticeable piece of black lint on top of it. Rather than cause a scene by sending it back, I just sliced that piece off and continued on. Just a suggestion...I really think they need to reconsider how they make their omelets which contain veggies. The entire bottom of the dish turned into a watery mess after a few minutes. The potatoes were soon swimming in the water that leaked out of the omelette and the English muffin (which was the highlight of the meal) turned into a wet sponge. Overall I'd mark today's breakfast as a FAIL and I would never return. I understand things get a little hectic when it's busy, but serving coffee in such an obviously dirty cup and not knowing how to prepare a simple omelette is unacceptable.

Paper plates only. Good for kids. Gets very crowded. Sad that this place could be so much more than it is.

This was an epic fail! Sent my sisters out to get a quick dinner so they bring back cheesesteaks and each one was worse than the other. The meat was so dried out that it was hard and resembled beef jerky. There was no cheese visible to the naked eye and the peppers were undercooked. Needless to say, this was my worse meal on vacation this week.

Everything I had here was great. Hummus wrap, ahi tuna wrap, fries, breakfast, yum. Sweet potato fries weren't great. Too thick and not soft enough.

Really good service by very nice people. The food is over priced for what you get, and everything is served in recyclable materials- everything. Plastic cutlery, cups and coffee served in to-go cups (that was actually really great). The food wasn't impressive and I don't think I would go back. But I imagine this place is good for people with young kids. The prices just need to be brought down a dollar or two.

Our family of 4 went in here early today and were promptly seated. We ordered breakfast except my son who ordered a classic burger. The 3 of our bfasts were very good, the french toast we really good but better maple syrup would've been a plus (versus the aunt jemimah kind). My son's burger was totally burned. They also did not provide the mayo on it he asked for. Serice was ok, young kid not really focused on making sure it was great,

Went here on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch so it wasn't crowded at all. Ordered the wrap with smoked salmon, eggs, cheddar, and avocado and loved it! Tried both the sweet potato and regular fries, both delicious. They have some standard mixed drinks on the menu and they even offer mimosas and bloody Mary's. Nice relaxed atmosphere and just the right amount of food. Will definitely go again.

Awful. Food was TERRIBLE and service was sloooow. Our server was nice, but completely inexperienced. I ordered the breakfast combo that was described as egg whites with spinach and mushrooms and a wheat blueberry pancake with lowfat yogurt. The egg whites were oddly scrambled separately from the mushrooms & spinach - all were greasy and overcooked. I've had better eggs prepared by a child. It seems like everything is cooked on the flattop with tons of butter. The pancake had a super-tough side that was hard to cut with a knife and tasted like cardboard. It was inedible. They forgot to include the yogurt, but it wouldn't have helped.

Great diner food and they have scrapple! They have great coffee and espresso, lattes, the works. The service was decent and oddly they serve everything in plastic cups and on paper plates.

This is a quick cheap eatery. Its child friendly, neat and close to the board walk. I had the chicken quesadilla (ok) and my husband the egg combo (also ok) Nothing great to write home about. We also had a blueberry pancake which I thought was good. Their cold coffee is just average and so is the Penguin palmer (an iced tea lemonade combo) Decent service, clean and average food.

Direct quote from my meal companion: "That place was gross. How did you eat that?" Well, I was hungry, but have to agree with her assessment. I had the cheese steak, another at the table had chicken strips and french fries, while my quotable companion had a glass of water and left for a stroll down the street while we ate. Difficult to believe anyone would go there more than once.

This is the tale of 2 restaurants, when the owners are on site, and when they're not. When they're not, the staff are like headless chickens, no one pitching in to deliver another's food (the wait is usually long anyway...) However, when the owners are there, both the food and service are markedly better. (Maybe they should hire a manager, and if they have, maybe they should get a new one!) Really good burgers!

    (3)
  • Sabrina L.

Don't go if you're short on time. The service is slow. The food is not worth the wait. I had a mediocre BLT with overcooked bacon. The BF had an egg burger. The egg was cooked through instead of over easy. The waitress was nice, but this place is inefficient and wasteful. They serve everything on paper plates and use plasticware for utensils.

My Goodness! So many bad reviews on here. My hubby and I were in Rehoboth yesterday, looking for a vegetarian lunch. We were surprised to find a hummus wrap on the menu (at a diner- who knew??) so we went in. Sure, the set-up isn't typical. You order at the counter, take a seat and have your food delivered. But it works. And it's obvious the owner is trying to cut costs at all measures by doing this but so what. I had the hummus wrap which was good- I would suggest a little more hummus but that's the way I like it. My hubby had the veggie wrap and enjoyed it. We also had fries with our wraps which were crispy and delicoius. Our table was cleared quickly, we got up and paid and that was that! My only concern with the place (and I will be writing the owner about this) is the amount of waste they are creating. There is no reason to give everyone wrapped up plastic wear- we didn't need knives, forks or spoons but we got them anyway, with our napkins. Also, my husband's soda was served in a plastic cup/lid and straw. Since we were dining in, we should have been given a real plastic cup and real silverwear. It's 2011- we should all be not only aware of our environmental concerns but willing to do something about it. Cutting out the plastic would be a great step for this company.

I liked this place. I was surprised at so many bad reviews. It is a little unconventional in that you go up to the counter and order your food yourself. We were a group of eight..I had them read the menu, I wrote down the order and gave it to the guy at the desk. I ate a cheesesteak which was very tasty, it came with home made potato chips which were delicious. My family ate a variety of items, cheese quesidilla, cheeseburger and chicken caesar wrap. Everyone was hapy with the meals. Bethany Beach is pretty crowded and we stopped here since there was no wait and were happy. ITs not gormet, but its fine.

Watch your wallet!!!! Went there to grab a quick bite to eat and was worried about all the bad reviews I saw on here after we ordered. Our food turned out ok. (Burger was well in instead of medium, but I was ok with it.) Wife had french toast and liked it. The kids had the chocolate chip pancakes (only comes with one pancake, but they don't each much). My wife and I even talked about writing a good review because it honestly was pretty good. My problem came with the bill. It was about $50 and when I asked to see the bill the guy ran my credit card before printing out the receipt. (The kids food was over priced by over a dollar each. It was $15 for 3 kids pancakes when it should have been 3.95 each (not including the $2 and change drinks each kid had) . The guy behind the counter started helping someone else and a waitress came over and said she was not sure she could help. The guy who was helping another customer kept saying we only get one deal (2 kids eat free with a paying adult or a 10% coupon my wife had). I said fine, but the kids meals were charged too much and the 2 pancake meals where a better deal than the 10% coupon. He only said back to me you only get one deal. I was not going to argue over a few $ , so I left a tip (that hopefully goes to the girl that brought the food and napkins) and decided to add to the bad reviews. Food was ok, but was over charged a few $ and I honestly think it was on purpose.

I adore penguins just as much as the next person, but when I visited this diner that was not enough to make me want to come back. I have been visiting Bethany for a few years, and had never tried it so I stopped in for lunch. It was total chaos, you order in the same line you pay in at the end of your meal, its confusing and backs up fast. My mom was at a table for sitting while I was ordering, brashly asking if she had placed an order and how many people would be sitting at the table, as if she was just sitting there for fun? Between three people we ordered 1 veggie wrap and 1 chicken caesar salad, 3 waters= $19.80. In my opinion the food was not worth the price, and the atmosphere didn't make me feel better about paying that much. -I am not sold that one visit makes a place a bad restaurant, I also believe that over a year a business can change a lot. I will visit the diner again this summer and report back hopefully good things!

Don't eat here!! The wait time was for service and food was too long. The waitress was inept. The ham in my daughter's ham and cheese omelet was spoiled. Took forever to get our bill, only to stand at the register for over 5 minutes to pay our bill. I finally found the exact change and left it with my check on the counter. This has to be the worst place in Bethany to eat, and I thought the Frog House was bad.

I've eaten at Penguin once last year, and again this year. I recalled it being pretty bad from last year, but stopped there again this year out of pure laziness. We needed a fast easy breakfast so we could go soak up as much precious beach time as possible, and Penguin has one thing down - location. My biggest gripe above all about this place is that everything is disposable. When I asked the woman why this is, she furrowed her brow in a way that made me think I wasn't the first to inquire, and gave me several responses: 1) "People like to take their meals back to the beach"... to which I thought - can't you offer take-out boxes for people who want to bring their runny eggs to the sandy beach (something I think few people would do, anyway). 2) "We wouldn't be able to let people in barefoot if there was glass" ... um, hello reusable plastic-ware and metal silverware?! 3) "We don't have dish washing facilities"... REALLY?! It's cheaper to pay for disposable crap than hire a dish washer?! What about the environmental cost of the waste you produce? The food is over-priced and under-whelming. The atmosphere is fine and well-lit, and the location is killer... but I just can't support a place with such an awful environmental conscious.

I must be going to a different place than some of the reviewers here. I have eaten at the penguin for the past couple of years and never had a bad or even a slightly unpleasant experience. Waitstaff has always been courteous and the food is average diner fare (above average for BB). Shakes are very good however and there is never a long wait to sit at the counter.

I spent last weekend at Bethany Beach and on Sunday morning, my fiancé decided to take a walk into the Bethany Beach boardwalk for coffee and breakfast. I know the beach is overwhelmed with tourists and August is the peak of high season traffic, but I have to say my dining experience is completely sub-par. Maybe the plastic silverware and paper plate should have tip off, but I simply ordered scrambled eggs, toast and sausage, hard to mess that order up. The eggs came dry and tasteless, the toast had a cardboard like quality and the sausage tasted like the microwave Jimmy Dean sausage. The saving grace of the Penguin Diner are the cute crayon colored drawings from the kid patrons, but a person generally goes to a diner for the food and not the drawings.

Had much better. Breakfast is not that difficult! Eggs were rubbery and pancakes were too sweet. Not cheap either. Very clean though and they do a good job recycling. Howere, should have gone to the FROG Pond across the street.

Location, location, location. Penguin diner has it. We've been four times and we've always had excellent service. Last week we ordered take-away for a picnic dinner on the beach. The cashier was super helpful offering up extra napkins and ketchup. I've also had take-away Egg Pengwich and it was tasty. The children's artwork hanging up is very cute. I've worked in many restaurants and one of them was a "paper store", no automatic dishwasher. I consider myself quite green and appreciate it when restaurants make the effort. Sometimes space dictates what you can and cannot do. Penguin Diner could take the retail space away and make room for a dishwasher, but there's a lot that goes into redesigning a restaurant. If this is the only "paper restaurant" in Bethany - then go there or don't go there. Go to Mango's and see if they're recycling all those bottles (I think not). Food...the food is not homemade and the quality is not good. The sweet potatoes fries (which probably arrive frozen as opposed to fresh sliced) are yummy. The veggie burger (Morningstar - yuck) is not tasty. The Bacon cheddar burger isn't a "good burger" either. I've asked for water twice (once when just ordering ice cream and once when getting take-away) and they were kind enough to give me a cup without charging me like a bunch of the other beach take-away restaurants.

This is my first review, but I felt strongly enough about our experience that I decided to post it. We, a family of 4, and another family of 4 are on vacation at Bethany this week, and we decided to have lunch here because of the cute penguin motif. The only table of 8 was taken, so we sat 2 adults at the counter and the rest at a table. When the menus were brought over, an older gentleman (I presume the owner) said that we could order from him at the side counter instead of at the front register. We really appreciated this gesture and went on to get our children situated. When we were ready to order and asked the young man working behind the counter if we could place our order with him, he said in a very rude manner, "You have to order up front". When we explained to him that we were told we could order from the side counter because the older gentleman said we could, he interrupted us and said, "NO, he did NOT tell you that. You have to order up front". First of all, there is a better way of telling people to order up front, such as, "I'm sorry, but we don't take orders here. Could you please go place an order up front". Second of all, you do not tell a customer that they are wrong, and accuse them of pretty much lying. I am giving this place 2 stars because we enjoyed the food and we did appreciate the sentiment of the older gentleman. However, the attitude of this young man is simply unacceptable from a customer service point of view. He needs to drop his self righteous attitude and think about how that would make a customer feel and the consequences of making that kind of impression on the customer while representing that dining establishment.

First time in Bethany Beach in a while. After a harrowing car accident the day before, we finally made it to the beach. And we were starving. We hit up this places expecting salvation. And in theory we got it (we didn't starve to death). But it wasn't very good. I got a burger with brie cheese. The cheese didn't have much taste to it, nor did the burger. In fact I'm pretty sure they just use pre-made patties seeing as how it was perfectly circular and flat. And it'd also explain the lack of any real flavor. The homemade chips were pretty decent though. The other people I dined with didn't have anything great to say about their meals either. I heard complaints about the guacamole being very plain. The prices were too high to justify what were essentially flavorless nutrients. I'm no Bethany food buff, but I'm certain you can do much better than this place.

I love this place and am surprised by the bad reviews. I've never seen it get crazy like some other people have described; I think the order/payment set-up works fine. I've been there at least half a dozen times and have gotten good service each time. The homemade chips are delicious and there are plenty of non-diner food choices and vegetarian options (I don't really consider the place a diner at all). Oh and they serve alcohol, which surprised me. The atmosphere is fun, food is great, service is good...what's to complain about?

Wow, I should have read Mallory's review because it sound like we ate the same meal this past weekend... My first clue should have been how empty it was on labor day weekend. I ordered at the counter with a fellow I believe may have been the owner and asked for the short stack of pancakes on the separate plate and he said "we'll bring you another plate" which of course they did not. It was eco-nightmare... plastic and paper everything - cups, plates, utensils... The pancakes were cold and hard like they were cooked earlier and served, the french toast was soggy and whole wheat (who makes french toast with whole wheat???) and my omelot was average and came with undercooked/crunchy home fries - about 8 nuggets - and one piece of dry toast. Whoa is me, if we could turn back time..., and run far away...

The Penguin Diner was a disappointment for breakfast. The service was very friendly but didn't make up for the lackluster food. My french toast was not hot off the griddle, tasting like it had been pre-made and then just heated up. The eggs were dry and the serving of hash browns was small. The food quality is not worth the price. Their wacky ordering system has you go up to the cash register to get a menu and go find a seat, come back up to the register to order and get a number, go sit down and wait for your food, and go back up to the register when you're finished to pay.

Had breakfast and lunch at the Penguin Diner on our last visit to Bethany. The food was fresh, hot and delicious. Prices are a little higher than we would pay at home but pretty much exactly what I would expect considering we are in a resort location in the center of town in high season. I don't get the negative reviews here... many of which say the food is good but give one or two stars for decor, style of service or because of the prices (which are clearly marked on the menu). I have eaten at the PD many times. It is bright and clean and the food is good. If you want cheap fast food or deep fried garbage eat somewhere else but the PD has some fresh and healthy options which I have no problem spending a few extra bucks for.

This is a GREAT place for lunch & breakfast. The healthy options are a welcome change from the normal high-calorie fare found @ the beach, and the prices are reasonable. The service was friendly & fast - not sure what others were complaining about .... maybe that was "old news" as we've been there twice in three days & not been disappointed.

I NEVER EVER LEAVE A REVIEW BUT THIS IS BEYOND UNACCEPTABLE ANYWHERE IN THE US. Yesterday was the first day I visited Bethany beach and I made the horrendous mistake of leading my family to this place. I have a very very special need child with a severe diet restriction and i was hoping this place will have something for her because her food got sand from the beach. While we were waiting for our food, I saw one of the kitchen employees eat from a plate using her hands while wearing gloves (no big deal so far, right) well, this person never removed the gloves, she kept working like nothing happened!!!!! 3 minutes later ANOTHER EMPLOYEE grab something from a bowl and ate it right there, in this case she wasn't wearing gloves!!!!!! But for this place, seems like this is not a big deal!!!!!! Then she continued to get a bagel bag, she took one and proceed to work. I was the winner of that bagel!!!!!! They brought our order to the table with the typical phrase: enjoy it!!!!! I kept looking at the kitchen when the bagel lady did the same for the second time!!!!! I went to the counter and I asked for the manager, the lady inmediatelly went to the kitchen and spoke with 3 people there (2 of them were the uneducated disrespectful workers) I thought that because the manager expressed a clients complaint the bagel lady will get a pair of gloves, right???? Well NO!!!!!! In fact she was arrogantly murmuring because of what I said.!!!!!! Unless I am in the desert I will eat in this place, but I AM PAYING FOR MY FOOD and this place is not cheap at all. Super conventional sandwiches are $9.00 and u get a 2 tablespoon salad for $1.00. This is definitively one of those places that don't deserve a second chance unless u lost ur mind.

Bad food, bad service, just bad. We tried it twice to give it a fair shake. Don't bother, there are plenty of other breakfast options. Penguin should do the community a favor, close it's doors and let something decent replace it.
